On behalf of the American Physical Therapy Association, Sports Physical Therapy Section we would like to extend a invitation for membership to the Intercollegiate & Professional Sports Special Interest Group. This is a newly established group dedicated to serving the needs and providing a forum for information exchange for individuals with similar sports medicine interests. It is our sincere hope that you will choose to become a member and become involved; in doing so, you will play an integral role in developing a network of like-minded individuals with similar professional interests.

The objectives of the SIG are as follows:

  1. Identify Sports Physical Therapists employed by or consulting with professional sports organizations and/or intercollegiate athletics programs.
  2. Provide forum for professional development through collegial interaction and networking.
  3. Implement educational programming which focuses on issues specific to the professional sports / intercollegiate athletics setting(s).
  4. Disseminate information regarding the benefits of utilizing sports physical therapy services in the professional sports and intercollegiate athletics setting(s).

SIG membership is not limited to Physical Therapists. Membership for individuals from other medical and allied health professions can be obtained through the SPTS Partner Program. Please refer to the SPTS website for more information.

2011 APTA CSM Intercollegiate and Professional SIG Meeting

The Intercollegiate and Professional SIG was well represented at the 2011 APTA Combined Sections Meeting.  Several SIG members were members of panels that presented Sports Section programming.  Additionally, our (informal) Business Meeting was very well attended, and many great ideas were exchanged. Among them:

  • Request was made to provide an educational lecture and/or lab session during our business meeting at CSM.  (Gary Calabrese will coordinate this project.)
  • Discussion resumed from last year regarding a survey of Best Practices in Sports Physical Therapy.  (Mark Reinking will coordinate this project.)
  • Ideas for future programming was discussed. Members are encouraged to submit programming proposals for CSM 2012 via ScholarOne website.  Submission information/directions are forthcoming.  The deadline for submission is April 4, 2012.
  • This year represents the SIG’s sixth year in existence.  What began as 9 members has evolved into more than 225 members.  The coming year represents a change in leadership, as John and I will be stepping down as Co-Chairs.

Many thanks to all of those who attended CSM, and especially to those who have supported our SIG over the past six years.

J. Allen Hardin, PT, MS, SCS, ATC, LAT, CSCS

Update of Activities for the Intercollegiate and Professional Athlete SIG
CSM 2010

John Stemm PT, SCS, ATC

The Intercollegiate and Professional Athlete SIG had another successful CSM. The educational platform, co-sponsored with Emergency Response SIG, was well attended by over 200 people. Special thanks to Danny Smith for all his hard work putting the platform together. The business meeting welcomed 12 new members; the SIG membership now stands at more than 150 members. Mark Reinking and Nick Cosgray presented two unique case studies that stimulated discussion amongst the group. The group unanimously agreed to increase our correspondence throughout the year and our desire to branch out to other organizations for educational opportunities. Following the meeting, members met informally for a social, as special thanks to Eric Parsells and Exertools for the continued support.
