Residency and Fellowship Special Interest Group

Mission Statement

The Residency Special Interest Group exists to promote and enhance residency and fellowship training within sports physical therapy. The Residency SIG will act as a facilitator for its members to optimize communication and share best-practices to enhance post-professional education and graduate outcomes.

Objectives

The Residency SIG will provide a forum for discussion to enhance communication with members to

  • Share post-professional best practices.
  • Discuss opportunities to develop and enhance residency and fellowship programs.
  • Provide feedback to the Sports Section EC and ABPTRFE to enhance sports residency curricula.
  • Promote the benefits of residency and fellowship program to individuals entering residency as well as facilities interested in starting a residency and fellowship program.
  • Serve as a bridge between clinicians and researchers to stimulate and/or facilitate research outcomes specific to residency and fellowship education.
  • Represent the interests of the membership of the Residency SIG within the Section.
  • Promote post-professional programming for the Combined Sections Meeting within and outside of the Sports Section. 
  • Develop a relationship with residency and student SIGs in other sections to facilitate and share information.

Residency SIG Goals:

Over the next 3 years (2011-2013), the Residency SIG will

  1. Re-evaluate the leadership position and associated responsibilities.
  2. Grow its membership to over 100 members.
  3. Revise and update Residency 101 presentation and continue programming at either CSM or TCC.
  4. Establish a competitive slate of newly developing residency grant applicants.
  5. Establish a liaison relationship between the Section and the ABPTRFE.
  6. Consistently review website to ensure information is accurate.
  7. Produce quarterly newsletter published on the Section website.
  8. Increase newly credentialed programs by three per year.

The Residency SIG Board is excited to announce the development of four initiatives:

  1. Approval of grant funding through the Section for developing Sports PT residency programs. The application and pre-requisites to apply for funding can be found on the Grant Funding Application.
  2. Development of a quarterly newsletter to highlight a program and provide curricular insight amongs institutions. Current Newsletter
  3. Updated emergency responder course offerings thought the country on the SPTS website.
  4. Development of a Resident Case Conference through the Sports Section at CSM 2011 to highlight the research of post-professional programs.
